Bengali Vowels and Vowel Signs: How the Script Writes Vowels
How the 11 independent Bengali vowels and their attached vowel signs (kar) work, with examples of how one consonant changes with each vowel.
Bengali is an alphasyllabary: each consonant carries an inherent vowel, and other vowels are added with marks attached around the consonant. Understanding this one idea unlocks how every Bengali word is written.
The independent vowels
Independent vowels appear at the start of a word or on their own:
অ (o), আ (a), ই (i), ঈ (i), উ (u), ঊ (u), ঋ (ri), এ (e), ঐ (oi), ও (o), ঔ (ou)
Notice that in modern spoken Bengali the short and long forms of i (ই / ঈ) and u (উ / ঊ) sound the same. The distinction survives in spelling, which is why the correct spelling of many words must be learned individually.
The inherent vowel
Each consonant letter carries an inherent vowel, usually pronounced like the "o" in "hot" or "cot". So ক is ko, ব is bo, and ম is mo. To write a different vowel, a sign called a kar (কার) is attached to the consonant.
Vowel signs
Take ক as an example:
- কা — ka (with আ-কার, া)
- কি — ki (with ই-কার, ি)
- কী — ki (with ঈ-কার, ী)
- কু — ku (with উ-কার, ু)
- কূ — ku (with ঊ-কার, ূ)
- কৃ — kri (with ঋ-কার, ৃ)
- কে — ke (with এ-কার, ে)
- কৈ — koi (with ঐ-কার, ৈ)
- কো — ko (with ও-কার, ো)
- কৌ — kou (with ঔ-কার, ৌ)
Where the signs go
Signs attach in different places: া and ী come after the consonant, ি and ে come before it in writing (though sounded after), ু and ূ go below, and ো and ৌ wrap around both sides. That surprises new learners, especially the fact that ি is written before the letter it follows in pronunciation. For example, কি is written with the ি first.
Reading a word
Take বই (boi, "book"): ব plus the independent vowel ই. Or ভালো (bhalo, "good"): ভ + া + ল + ো. Reading letter by letter, applying the vowel signs, is how you decode any unfamiliar word.
Common beginner errors
- Mixing up ি and ী, or ু and ূ, because they sound the same.
- Forgetting that the inherent vowel is o, not a.
- Reading ি in the wrong order.
Practice plan
- Learn the eleven independent vowels.
- Attach each sign to three different consonants.
- Read aloud word lists organised by vowel.
- Look up any new word in Bengali script to check its spelling.
Why script matters
Roman transliteration cannot capture the spelling distinctions. Looking up words in real script builds the spelling memory you need for reading and writing.
