Bengali Pronunciation Tips for English Speakers
The sounds English speakers most often get wrong in Bengali, from the inherent 'o' vowel to aspirated consonants, with exercises to fix them.
Bengali pronunciation is friendly in many ways — spelling is fairly regular, and there is no tone system — but a handful of sounds need deliberate attention.
The "o" vowel
The most striking feature to English ears is that the inherent vowel in most consonants sounds like the "o" in "hot", not the "a" in "father". The word for "book", বই, is boi, and the word for "house", ঘর, is ghor. English speakers who read ক as "ka" will consistently mispronounce words.
Vowel harmony and shifts
Bengali vowels shift depending on surrounding vowels, so the same letter can sound slightly different in different words. This is normal and picked up through listening.
Aspirated consonants
Aspiration is a puff of air. Hold a hand in front of your mouth: ক (ko) has little air, খ (kho) has a clear puff. The pairs are:
- ক / খ, গ / ঘ
- চ / ছ, জ / ঝ
- ট / ঠ, ড / ঢ
- ত / থ, দ / ধ
- প / ফ, ব / ভ
Say each pair aloud until the difference feels natural. Note that ফ is often pronounced closer to "f" in casual speech, especially in Bangladesh.
Retroflex and dental
ট ঠ ড ঢ are produced with the tongue curled back; ত থ দ ধ with the tongue against the teeth. English speakers tend to produce something in between, and listeners may still understand, but precise pronunciation helps.
The "sh" sounds
শ, ষ and স are usually pronounced as sh in Bengali, except in certain conjuncts. That is why the name সুমন is pronounced closer to Shumon than "Suman".
Nasal vowels
The chandrabindu ঁ makes the vowel nasal, as in French. চাঁদ (chand, moon) and হাঁস (hash, duck) both have a nasal a.
Stress and rhythm
Bengali usually places stress on the first syllable of a word, and sentences have a fairly even rhythm. English speakers tend to add extra stress in the middle of words, which can sound foreign.
Final vowels
Many words ending in the inherent vowel drop it in speech. মানুষ is manush, not "manusho". Reading by the spelling alone will make you sound too formal.
Practice routine
- Listen to native speakers, such as songs, news or podcasts, for ten minutes a day.
- Record yourself saying ten words and compare.
- Practise aspirated pairs in minimal pairs, such as কাল (kal, time) and খাল (khal, canal).
- Use a dictionary to check spelling before guessing pronunciation.
