Bengali Conjuncts (Juktakkhor): Reading Letter Clusters with Confidence
How Bengali joins consonants into conjunct letters, with the most common clusters and example words to help you decode them.
When two or more consonants come together with no vowel between them, Bengali often writes them as a single combined shape called a juktakkhor (যুক্তাক্ষর). Conjuncts look intimidating at first, but a small set of them accounts for most of what you will read.
How conjuncts form
The first consonant loses its inherent vowel, and the two are fused. Sometimes the shapes stack, sometimes they sit side by side, and sometimes they merge into a new form that is hard to recognise as two letters.
Common transparent conjuncts
These are easy to read because you can still see both letters:
- স্ত (sto) — as in রাস্তা (rasta, road)
- ন্ত (nto) — as in শান্ত (shanto, calm)
- ন্দ (ndo) — as in আনন্দ (anondo, joy)
- ম্প (mpo) — as in কম্পিউটার (kompiutar, computer)
- ল্প (lpo) — as in গল্প (golpo, story)
- স্ক (sko) — as in স্কুল (skul, school)
Conjuncts that look different
Others have fused into distinct shapes:
- ক্ষ (kkho) — as in শিক্ষা (shikkha, education)
- জ্ঞ (gg) — as in বিজ্ঞান (biggyan, science)
- ক্ত (kto) — as in রক্ত (rokto, blood)
- ষ্ট (shto) — as in সৃষ্টি (srishti, creation)
- ত্র (tro) — as in ছাত্র (chhatro, student)
- দ্ধ (ddho) — as in যুদ্ধ (juddho, war)
The special forms
Three markers appear constantly:
- র-ফলা (ra-phala, ্র): a hook below a letter meaning "-r-", as in প্রথম (prothom, first).
- য-ফলা (ya-phala, ্য): a mark meaning "-y-" that also doubles the previous consonant sound, as in ব্যস্ত (byasto, busy).
- রেফ (reph, র্): a small hook above a letter meaning r before the consonant, as in সূর্য (shurjo, sun).
Pronunciation surprises
Conjuncts don't always sound like the letters that form them. জ্ঞ is written with জ and ঞ but sounds like gg or gy, and ক্ষ sounds like kkho. These are best learned as whole units.
Strategy for learners
- Learn the ten to fifteen most common conjuncts first.
- Practise with real words, not isolated combinations.
- When you meet an unknown cluster, break it into its parts, then check its pronunciation.
- Keep a small notebook of conjunct examples.
Why dictionaries help
If you meet an unknown conjunct in a word, a dictionary that shows the word in script and gives its meaning turns the puzzle into a memorable example.
