Days, Months and Seasons in English and Hindi (and the Tricky Word कल)

Learn the English and Hindi names for weekdays, months and seasons, and why the Hindi word कल means both yesterday and tomorrow.

Calendar words are a basic building block. They are simple to memorise, but Hindi has one famous trap.

Tuesday मंगलवार
Wednesday बुधवार

Months

The Hindi names for the Gregorian months are borrowed from English, adapted to Devanagari:

जनवरी, फ़रवरी, मार्च, अप्रैल, मई, जून, जुलाई, अगस्त, सितंबर, अक्टूबर, नवंबर, दिसंबर.

Traditional Hindu calendar months such as चैत्र, वैशाख and श्रावण exist too, and they are used for festivals.

Seasons

rainy season / monsoon बरसात, बारिश का मौसम
winter सर्दी
spring वसंत

The tricky word: कल

कल means both "yesterday" and "tomorrow". Hindi relies on the verb tense to tell you which one:

  • कल मैं दिल्ली गया था। — Yesterday I went to Delhi. (past tense)
  • कल मैं दिल्ली जाऊँगा। — Tomorrow I will go to Delhi. (future tense)

For clarity, Hindi speakers sometimes say बीता हुआ कल (yesterday) or आने वाला कल (tomorrow). The day before yesterday and the day after tomorrow are both परसों.

Other time words

  • आज — today
  • अभी — now
  • हफ़्ता / सप्ताह — week
  • महीना — month
  • साल — year

Useful sentences

  • What day is it today? — आज कौन सा दिन है?
  • Today is Monday. — आज सोमवार है।
  • My birthday is in March. — मेरा जन्मदिन मार्च में है।

Tips

  1. Learn the weekdays as one chant.
  2. Practise कल with past and future sentences.
  3. Look up परसों and remember it is ambiguous too.
