Vowel Signs in Kannada: How ಕ Becomes ಕಾ, ಕಿ and ಕು

How Kannada attaches vowel signs to consonants, with the full pattern for ಕ, and why the inherent 'a' matters.

Every Kannada consonant carries an inherent a sound, so ಕ reads ka. To change the vowel, you add a vowel sign (ಕಾಗುಣಿತ, kāguṇita) to the consonant.

The full set for ಕ

Vowel Sign Result Sound
ಅ (none) ಕ ka
ಆ ಾ ಕಾ kā
ಇ ಿ ಕಿ ki
ಈ ೀ ಕೀ kī
ಉ ು ಕು ku
ಊ ೂ ಕೂ kū
ಋ ೃ ಕೃ kṛ
ಎ ೆ ಕೆ ke
ಏ ೇ ಕೇ kē
ಐ ೈ ಕೈ kai
ಒ ೊ ಕೊ ko
ಓ ೋ ಕೋ kō
ಔ ೌ ಕೌ kau

The same signs attach to every consonant. For example, with ಮ: ಮ, ಮಾ, ಮಿ, ಮೀ, ಮು, ಮೂ, ಮೆ, ಮೇ, ಮೈ, ಮೊ, ಮೋ, ಮೌ.

Reading words

  • ಕಾಫಿ (kāphi, coffee): ಕಾ + ಫಿ
  • ಮನೆ (mane, house): ಮ + ನೆ
  • ನೀರು (nīru, water): ನೀ + ರು
  • ಹೂವು (hūvu, flower): ಹೂ + ವು
  • ಕೈ (kai, hand): ಕೈ

Why this matters

Once you know the signs, you can read any syllable. Kannada is highly phonetic: what you see is what you say.

Practice

Read these aloud:

  1. ಕಲಿ (kali, learn)
  2. ಬೇಕು (bēku, need)
  3. ಊಟ (ūṭa, meal)
  4. ಕೋಪ (kōpa, anger)

Tips

  1. Learn the signs on one consonant first, then apply them to others.
  2. Write out syllable tables for a few consonants.
  3. Use the dictionary to check spelling.
