The six traditional seasons

Classical Tamil literature describes six seasons, each lasting about two months:

முதுவேனில் late summer
கார் monsoon
கூதிர் autumn
முன்பனி early winter
பின்பனி late winter

Everyday seasons

In daily speech, people talk simply about:

  • மழைக்காலம் (mazhaikkaalam), the rainy season
  • குளிர்காலம் (kulirkaalam), winter

Monsoons in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu receives much of its rain from the northeast monsoon, in the later months of the year, which differs from many other parts of India. Rain is important for farming and appears often in songs and poems.

Temperature

Temperatures are given in Celsius: முப்பது டிகிரி (thirty degrees).

Tips

  1. Learn the weather nouns.
  2. Practise மழை பெய்கிறது.
