To Be and To Have in Tamil

How Tamil handles 'to be' and 'to have', with இருக்கிறது and the possessive structure.

Tamil handles "to be" and "to have" differently from English.

To be: no verb in the present

For simple statements, Tamil leaves out "am, is, are":

  • நான் மாணவன். I am a student.
  • அவள் மருத்துவர். She is a doctor.
  • இது புத்தகம். This is a book.

To be: location and existence

Use இருக்கிறது forms for being somewhere or existing:

Pronoun Form
நான் இருக்கிறேன்
நீ இருக்கிறாய்
அவன் இருக்கிறான்
அவள் இருக்கிறாள்
அது இருக்கிறது
நாங்கள் இருக்கிறோம்
நீங்கள் இருக்கிறீர்கள்
அவர்கள் இருக்கிறார்கள்
  • நான் வீட்டில் இருக்கிறேன். I am at home.
  • மேசையில் புத்தகம் இருக்கிறது. There is a book on the table.

To have

Tamil expresses possession with the dative case and இருக்கிறது:

  • எனக்கு ஒரு சகோதரன் இருக்கிறான். I have a brother. (literally "to me a brother is")
  • அவளுக்கு ஒரு கார் இருக்கிறது. She has a car.
  • எங்களிடம் நேரம் இருக்கிறது. We have time.

Negative

Use இல்லை:

  • என்னிடம் பணம் இல்லை. I don't have money.
  • அவர் வீட்டில் இல்லை. He is not at home.

Past

Use இருந்தது and its forms:

  • நேற்று நான் வீட்டில் இருந்தேன். I was at home yesterday.
  • எனக்கு ஒரு நாய் இருந்தது. I had a dog.

Two ways to say "have"

Both எனக்கு (to me) and என்னிடம் (with me, in my possession) are used. எனக்கு is common for relatives and feelings, and என்னிடம் for things one holds, such as money.

Tips

  1. Remember: no "is" in simple statements.
  2. Use எனக்கு ... இருக்கிறது for "I have".
  3. Use the dictionary to check forms.
