Forming Plurals in Tamil
How Tamil makes nouns plural with கள், and the spelling changes that come with it.
The standard Tamil plural ending is -கள் (-kal).
The basic rule
Add -கள் to the noun:
| Singular | Plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| பூ (poo) | பூக்கள் (pookkal) | flower(s) |
| வீடு (veedu) | வீடுகள் (veedugal) | house(s) |
| புத்தகம் (puththagam) | புத்தகங்கள் (puththagangal) | book(s) |
| மரம் (maram) | மரங்கள் (marangal) | tree(s) |
| பள்ளி (palli) | பள்ளிகள் (pallikal) | school(s) |
Words ending in -ம்
Nouns ending in -ம் drop the ம் and add -ங்கள்:
- மரம் becomes மரங்கள்
- புத்தகம் becomes புத்தகங்கள்
- பாடம் becomes பாடங்கள் (lessons)
Words ending in a vowel
Some words add a doubled consonant: பூ becomes பூக்கள், with க் inserted.
People
For people, -கள் is also used, and for respect forms -ர்கள் appears:
- ஆசிரியர் (teacher) becomes ஆசிரியர்கள்
- மாணவன் (student) becomes மாணவர்கள்
When the plural is not needed
Tamil often does not use the plural after a number:
- இரண்டு புத்தகம் can be used instead of இரண்டு புத்தகங்கள் in speech.
Plural pronouns
- நாங்கள் (we, exclusive)
- நாம் (we, inclusive)
- நீங்கள் (you, plural or formal)
- அவர்கள் (they)
