50 Common Tamil Words Every Beginner Should Know
A starter list of everyday Tamil words with English meanings, grouped by theme, to build a working vocabulary fast.
Tamil is one of the world's oldest continuously spoken classical languages, with over 75 million speakers primarily across Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and a substantial global diaspora. Building a working vocabulary starts with small, everyday word groups.
Greetings and courtesy
Vanakkam (a respectful, widely used greeting), nandri (thank you), dayavu seydhu (please), mannikkavum (excuse me/sorry) — the everyday courtesy phrases that open most conversations.
Family
Amma (mother), appa (father), anna (older brother), akka (older sister), nanban/thozhi (friend, gendered) — note Tamil, like several South Indian languages, distinguishes older and younger siblings with different terms.
Numbers
Ondru (one), irandu (two), moondru (three) through paththu (ten) — Tamil numerals in Tamil script have their own distinctive forms.
Everyday life
Thanneer (water), saapadu (food), veedu (house), velai (work), pallikoodam (school).
Time
Indru (today), naalai (tomorrow), nettru (yesterday), neram (time).
Why script matters here
Tamil script is a distinct South Indian writing system with a genuinely long, independent literary history — visually and structurally its own system, not closely related to the Devanagari-family scripts used further north. Looking up words in proper Tamil script, rather than Roman transliteration alone, builds genuine reading recognition from the start.
A simple way to build from this list
- Pick five to eight words a day rather than the whole list at once.
- Look each one up in Tamil script and read it aloud.
- Use each new word in a short sentence of your own.
- Review yesterday's words before adding today's.
