Running in Rain and Wind: Practical Tips

How to handle wet and windy conditions, from clothing choices to route planning and pacing into the wind.

Rain and wind are not reasons to skip every run. With a few adjustments, they can be fine.

Rain

  • Wear a light, water-resistant jacket, or a thin layer if it is warm.
  • Wear a cap with a brim to keep rain off your face.
  • Choose shoes with good grip for wet surfaces.
  • Slow down on wet paving, painted lines and metal covers, which can be slippery.
  • Protect your phone in a waterproof pouch or a zipped pocket.

Preventing chafing

Wet clothing rubs more. Consider anti-chafe balm on areas such as the inner thighs, underarms and feet, and wear seamless clothing.

Wind

  • Start into the wind, so you finish with it behind you. This avoids ending the run cold and wet.
  • Expect a slower pace into a headwind. Judge by effort.
  • Take care near trees in strong winds. Falling branches are a risk.

Lightning and storms

Do not run during thunderstorms. Wait until the storm passes.

After the run

  • Take off wet clothes and shoes.
  • Stuff shoes with newspaper to help them dry.
  • Do not use a direct heater on shoes, which can damage them.

A mindset

Many runners find that the hardest part of a wet run is stepping out the door. Once you start, you warm up.

Tips

  • Dress for the conditions.
  • Be extra careful in low light.
  • Choose a shorter loop near home on rough days.
