Strength Training for Runners: A Simple Routine
Why strength work helps runners and a short bodyweight routine you can do at home twice a week.
Strength training supports running. It can help you stay injury-free and run more efficiently.
Why runners benefit
- Stronger muscles absorb impact better.
- A stronger core helps hold good posture when tired.
- Strong hips and glutes support your knees.
- It may help reduce injury risk.
How often
Two short sessions a week is a good start, on easy or rest days. Avoid hard strength work right before a hard run.
A simple routine
Do 2 or 3 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions of each:
- Squats: feet shoulder-width apart, sit back and down.
- Lunges: step forward and lower your back knee.
- Glute bridges: lie on your back, lift your hips.
- Calf raises: rise on to your toes, lower slowly.
- Plank: hold for 20 to 40 seconds.
- Side plank: hold for 15 to 30 seconds each side.
- Single-leg balance: stand on one leg for 30 seconds.
Form first
Go slowly and control each movement. Quality is more important than speed or weight.
Progress gradually
- Add repetitions or a set.
- Hold planks longer.
- Add light weights if you wish.
Time-poor?
Even 10 minutes is worth doing. Consistency beats occasional long sessions.
Tips
- Stop if you feel sharp pain.
- Keep it simple.
- Pair it with your warm-up or cool-down.
- Consult a professional if you have an injury.
