How GPS Running Tracking Actually Works
A plain explanation of how GPS-based run tracking calculates distance, pace and route, and why accuracy can vary.
Tapping "start" on a run tracker and watching your distance tick up feels seamless, but there's genuine technology behind that number — and understanding it helps explain why GPS accuracy sometimes varies between runs.
The basic principle: triangulation from satellites
Your phone's GPS receiver calculates its position by measuring signals from multiple satellites orbiting the earth, determining distance to each based on signal travel time, and triangulating a precise location from several of these readings simultaneously. A run tracker records this position repeatedly throughout your run, building a path from a series of connected points.
How distance gets calculated from those points
Distance isn't measured directly — it's calculated by adding up the straight-line distance between each consecutive recorded GPS point along your route. More frequent, accurate position readings produce a path that more closely follows your actual route; sparser or less accurate readings can undercount distance around curves, or overcount it if the signal jitters.
Why GPS accuracy varies between runs
Open sky vs dense urban areas. GPS works best with a clear, unobstructed view of the sky — tall buildings, dense tree cover, and tunnels can all degrade signal quality, sometimes causing your recorded route to jump or drift from your actual path.
Warm-up time. GPS accuracy typically improves a few moments after your tracker starts, once your phone has properly locked onto enough satellites — starting to move immediately, before a solid lock, can result in a less accurate first portion of a run.
Weather and atmospheric conditions, though modern GPS is generally quite resilient to this compared to earlier technology.
Why offline GPS matters

Getting the most accurate tracking
Starting your tracker a few moments before you begin moving (giving GPS time to establish a solid lock), running routes with reasonably clear sky visibility where possible, and understanding that dense urban or heavily tree-covered routes may show slightly less precise tracking are all practical ways to get the most reliable results.
Why small inaccuracies are normal, not a bug
Some run-to-run variation in exact distance for the same familiar route is normal and expected, given how GPS technology fundamentally works — small discrepancies don't indicate anything wrong with your tracker, just the inherent, well-understood limits of satellite-based positioning.
