The Home in Punjabi: Rooms, Furniture and Household Words

The house

The ਵਿਹੜਾ is the open courtyard at the centre of a traditional Punjabi home.

Where things are
Punjabi uses postpositions after the noun:
- ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੇਜ਼ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੈ। — The book is on the table.
- ਚਾਬੀ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ। — The key is in the room.
- ਕੁਰਸੀ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੈ। — The chair is near the window.
- ਬੱਚੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੇਡ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। — The children are playing in the courtyard.
Household chores
- ਸਫ਼ਾਈ ਕਰਨਾ — to clean
- ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ — to cook
- ਕੱਪੜੇ ਧੋਣਾ — to wash clothes
Describing your home
- ਸਾਡਾ ਘਰ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ। — Our house is big.
- ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਾਰ ਕਮਰੇ ਹਨ। — Our house has four rooms.
