When the Flashlight Won't Turn On: A Troubleshooting Guide

Step-by-step checks to try when your phone's flashlight fails, from simple restarts to camera and battery issues.

You tap the torch and nothing happens. Before you worry, work through these checks in order.

Quick checks

  1. Try again. Tap once more, and wait a second.
  2. Check the flash. Look at the small LED next to the camera for dirt or a case blocking it.
  3. Is the phone hot? If it's warm, let it cool down. Some phones disable the flash to protect themselves.
  4. Is the battery very low? Some phones limit or block the flash at low charge.
  5. Is battery saver on? Try turning it off.

Camera conflicts

The flash is tied to the camera hardware. If another app is using the camera, the torch may not switch on.

  • Close the camera app, and any app that might use it, such as video calls.
  • Close apps from the recent list, then try again.

Restart

Switch the phone off and on. This clears many temporary faults and is often enough.

Update

  • Update your flashlight app to its latest version.
  • Update Android, if an update is available.

Check with another torch

Try the phone's built-in torch from the quick settings panel, if it has one. If that works but the app doesn't, the problem may be the app. If neither works, the fault may be with the phone.

Clear the app's data

If a particular app misbehaves, go to your phone's settings, open the app's details, and try Clear cache. If needed, reinstall the app.

Hardware faults

If none of these steps helps:

  • The LED may be faulty, especially after a drop or water damage.
  • The phone may have no flash. Some models don't.
  • Ask a repair professional if the camera flash fails in every app.

Test the camera flash

Open the camera and take a photo in a dark room with the flash on. If it doesn't fire, the LED itself probably has a problem.

Tips

  • Keep the flash area clean.
  • Avoid leaving the phone in a hot car.
  • Keep a spare light in case of trouble.
