Looking After Your Phone Battery: Habits That Make It Last
Simple, evidence-based habits to keep a phone battery healthy for longer, without myths.
A phone battery wears out over time, but good habits slow the ageing. Here's what helps, and what's a myth.
How phone batteries age
Most phones use lithium-ion batteries. Each time you charge and discharge, they lose a little capacity. After hundreds of charge cycles, the battery holds noticeably less charge. Heat speeds up this ageing.
What helps
- Avoid heat. Don't leave your phone in a hot car, in direct sun or under a pillow while charging. Heat is the biggest enemy.
- Avoid extreme cold. Cold can make the battery shut off, though it usually recovers when warmed.
- Use a good charger. Use the charger that came with the phone, or a reputable brand.
- Don't always run it to zero. Very deep discharges add stress.
- Don't always keep it at 100%. Some phone makers offer settings that limit charging, for example to around 80%, or slow charging overnight.
- Charge whenever it's convenient. Small top-ups are fine for lithium-ion batteries.
- Keep the phone updated. Updates sometimes improve battery management.
Common myths
| Myth | Reality |
|---|---|
| "You must fully drain it before charging." | That was true for some old battery types, not for modern phones. |
| "Leaving it plugged in overnight ruins it." | Modern phones stop charging when full, though staying at 100% in the heat isn't ideal. |
| "Closing all apps saves battery." | Constantly force-closing apps can use more power reopening them. |
| "Cheap chargers are the same." | Poor chargers can be inefficient or unsafe. |
Signs of a worn battery
- The phone runs out of charge quickly.
- It shuts down while still showing some charge.
- It gets unusually hot.
- The battery swells. If so, stop using it and seek repair.
Replacing the battery
Many phones allow battery replacement by a repair shop. If your phone is otherwise fine, this can give it a new lease of life.
For emergency use
If you rely on your phone for light in power cuts, a battery in good condition helps. Keep a power bank charged, and use the torch in short bursts.
Small apps, small impact
Lightweight apps that do nothing in the background, like a simple flashlight, have minimal effect on battery life when idle.
