Dark Mode and Night Settings: Comfortable Screens After Dark
How dark mode, brightness controls and night-light settings can make your phone easier on the eyes at night, and what they can and can't do.
A bright phone screen in a dark room can feel harsh. Phones offer settings to make night use more comfortable.
Dark mode
Dark mode shows light text on a dark background. Benefits:
- Less glare in dim rooms.
- Battery savings on phones with OLED screens, where dark pixels use less power.
- A more comfortable look for many people at night.
Some people find light-on-dark harder to read in bright places, and many phones can switch automatically by time of day.
Brightness
- Lower brightness at night. A screen that's much brighter than its surroundings dazzles.
- Use auto-brightness, which adjusts to ambient light.
- Use "extra dim" options where available, for very low light.
Night light and warm colours
Many phones have a night light or reading mode that shifts the screen towards warmer, more orange tones. It may feel gentler on the eyes in the evening.
Does blue light affect sleep?
Blue light from screens is often blamed for poor sleep, but the research is mixed. Bright light in the evening, from any source, can make it harder to feel sleepy, and so can stimulating content. Warm, dim settings are a reasonable comfort choice, but not a cure-all.
Habits that help sleep
- Avoid screens for a while before bed, if you can.
- Keep the room dark.
- Keep the phone across the room or face-down.
- Use "do not disturb" at night.
- Keep a regular schedule.
Your eyes
- Take breaks from screens.
- Blink often.
- Keep the screen at a comfortable distance.
Torch versus screen
Some apps use a white screen as a light source. It gives only a weak glow compared with the flash LED, and it drains more battery. The LED is a better light for looking around.
Switching between
If you use the phone torch at night, remember that the phone screen can also dazzle your eyes. Turning the screen off while the torch is on helps preserve your night vision.
