Helping Children Who Are Afraid of the Dark
Gentle, practical ideas for helping children feel safe at night, including how a small torch can become a comforting tool.
Many children go through a phase of being afraid of the dark. It's common, and usually passes. Patience and small changes make a big difference.
Why children fear the dark
Young children have vivid imaginations. In the dark, they can't see what is around them, so the mind fills the gaps. Fear of the dark is common in the pre-school years and usually eases with age.
Do
- Take the fear seriously. Say "I can see you feel scared. Let's work out what helps."
- Stay calm. Children pick up on your feelings.
- Offer comfort, such as a hug, a story or a cuddly toy.
- Keep a routine. A predictable bedtime helps.
- Talk in daytime about what scares them.
- Praise brave steps.
Ideas that help
| Idea | How it helps |
|---|---|
| A night light | a soft glow makes the room familiar |
| Leaving the door ajar | they can hear and see signs of family |
| A bedtime story | a calm, happy end to the day |
| A checking routine | look under the bed together, calmly |
| A special toy | a comfort object to hold |
| A child's own torch | some children feel safer with a small light they control |
A torch as a helper
A small torch can turn fear into control. Let your child:
- Choose a torch to keep by the bed.
- Learn to switch it on and off with you.
- Use it to look around the room and see that everything is normal.
- Play a shadow game during the day.
Keep the torch as a comfort tool. Store spare batteries safely, out of reach of small children.
What to avoid
- Dismissing the fear ("Don't be silly").
- Scary stories or shows before bed.
- Punishing a child for being afraid.
- Leaving a very bright light that keeps them awake.
When to seek help
If the fear is intense, lasts a long time, or is part of wider worry or sleep problems, speak to a doctor or child health professional.
Building confidence
Over time, most children grow out of it. Praise small steps and stay patient.
