Textbook Malay and the Malay you hear on the street can sound quite different. Knowing a few features of colloquial speech will help you follow real conversations.
Shortened words
Spoken Malay shortens many words:

Examples:

- Dah makan? — Have you eaten?
- Awak nak pergi mana? — Where do you want to go?
Particles
Small words at the end of a sentence add tone:
| Particle | Feel |
|---|---|
| lah | softens or emphasises: Jomlah! (Let's go!) |
| kan | seeking agreement: Sedap kan? (Delicious, right?) |
| ke | question tag: Betul ke? (Really?) |
| pun | also, even: Saya pun nak. (I want it too) |
| je | just: Sikit je. (Just a little) |
Common expressions

- Boleh. — Can, okay.
- Jom! — Let's go!
- Wah! — Wow!
- Betul. — Correct, true.

Mixing languages
