Practical tips
- Toilet paper: in many places, plumbing is narrow, and used paper goes in the bin beside the toilet rather than being flushed. There's usually a sign.
- Air conditioning: often charged extra in small guesthouses, or run by a key card.
- Hot water: may be solar or heated on demand: allow time.
- Noise and late nights: summer nightlife can be loud, so ask for a quiet room.
- Check-in times may be flexible on islands if you inform the host of your ferry time.
- Cash is often preferred in small guesthouses.
Hospitality
Hosts in small places often go out of their way to help, offering recommendations, a coffee or a homemade sweet. A friendly Καλημέρα and a thank-you are appreciated.
Common mistakes
- Flushing paper where signs ask you not to.
- Arriving without telling the host.
- Expecting large hotels on small islands.
