Conjuncts and Vottulu: Joining Consonants in Telugu
How Telugu writes two consonants together, using a stacked second letter called a vattu.
When two consonants appear together with no vowel between them, Telugu stacks the second under the first. These stacked forms are called ఒత్తులు (vottulu).
The idea
The first consonant takes the usual form, and the second shrinks into a subscript form below or beside it.
Examples
| Word | Meaning | Cluster |
|---|---|---|
| అమ్మ (amma) | mother | మ్మ |
| అక్క (akka) | older sister | క్క |
| పుస్తకం (pustakam) | book | స్త |
| ప్రేమ (prema) | love | ప్ర |
| విద్య (vidya) | education | ద్య |
| చెట్టు (chettu) | tree | ట్ట |
| స్నేహం (sneham) | friendship | స్న |
The virama
A small stroke called the virama (్) cancels the vowel of a consonant. When a consonant is followed by another, the virama joins them. Many clusters can also be seen as consonant, virama, consonant.
Doubled letters
Telugu often doubles a consonant:
- అమ్మ (amma), mother
- నాన్న (naanna), father
- పిల్ల (pilla), child, girl
The doubling gives the sound extra length.
Reading clusters
- Find the first letter, the main shape.
- Look below it for the stacked letter.
- Say them together with the vowel at the end.
The letter ర in clusters
ర has a special form when it comes second in a cluster, as in ప్ర (pra) and క్ర (kra). Learn it as a separate shape.
Why this matters
Many common words have clusters, so recognising them saves time and prevents misreading.
Tips
- Practise with common words.
- Learn the shape of ర in clusters.
- Use the dictionary to check difficult spellings.
