The main colours

Describing things
Colours go before the noun, often in a shortened form:
- ఎర్ర పువ్వు, a red flower
- నీలి ఆకాశం, the blue sky
- తెల్ల చొక్కా, a white shirt
- నల్ల కుక్క, a black dog
Notice ఎరుపు becoming ఎర్ర, తెలుపు becoming తెల్ల and నలుపు becoming నల్ల before a noun.
Interesting words
- ఆకుపచ్చ means "leaf-green", from ఆకు (leaf) and పచ్చ (green).
- పసుపు means both yellow and turmeric, which is considered auspicious.
Colours in culture
- ఎరుపు is common in weddings and festivals.
- పసుపు and కుంకుమ (vermilion) are used in many ceremonies.

- మీకు ఇష్టమైన రంగు ఏమిటి? What is your favourite colour?
- నాకు నీలం రంగు ఇష్టం. I like blue.
- వేరే రంగు ఉందా? Is there another colour?
