Sufi Poetry and Divine Love: Ishq-e-Haqiqi and Ishq-e-Majazi
How Sufi poets used the language of love to speak of the divine, and why a love poem can have two meanings.
Many verses that read like love poems carry a second, spiritual meaning.
Two kinds of love
Persian and Urdu tradition distinguishes:
- इश्क़-ए-मजाज़ी (ishq-e-majaazee), earthly or worldly love
- इश्क़-ए-हक़ीक़ी (ishq-e-haqeeqee), divine or real love
The beloved with two faces
In Sufi poetry, the beloved can be a human being or the divine. A poem may be read either way, and poets often leave the question open.
Sufi imagery
| Image | Spiritual meaning |
|---|---|
| साक़ी (cup-bearer) | the guide, the giver of insight |
| शराब (wine) | spiritual ecstasy |
| मयख़ाना (tavern) | a place of spiritual gathering |
| शमा और परवाना | the soul consumed by divine light |
| फ़ना (annihilation) | losing the self in the divine |
Why use love's language
Poets argue that the intensity of human love gives a glimpse of something greater. The pain of separation stands for the soul's longing to be reunited with its source.
Sufi poets in the region
Sufi thought shaped poetry in Persian, Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi and other languages. Amir Khusrau and Bulleh Shah are closely associated with Sufi poetry, and the verses of Kabir blend Bhakti and Sufi ideas of love and spirit.
Qawwali
क़व्वाली is a devotional music tradition rooted in Sufi practice, with powerful singing, repeated refrains and clapping. It often sets verses that can be heard on both levels.
Reading both ways
When you read a love verse, you can enjoy it in its human sense. If it feels deeper, you may also read it as a spiritual one. Neither reading cancels the other.
An original example
तेरी तलाश में निकला था ख़ुद को भूल गया, अब जहाँ देखता हूँ बस तू ही तू है।
Teree talaash mein niklaa thaa khud ko bhool gayaa, ab jahaan dekhta hoon bas too hee too hai. I set out in search of you and forgot myself; now wherever I look, it is only you.
An original couplet for illustration only.
Tips
- Read with an open mind.
