Shayari and Hindi Film Songs: A Long Partnership
How the language of shayari shaped Hindi film lyrics, and why so many songs sound like ghazals.
Much of the poetry that Indians know best comes through film songs.
A shared vocabulary
Hindi film lyrics have long borrowed from Urdu shayari. Words such as इश्क़, दिल, जुदाई, ख़्वाब and मोहब्बत appear constantly in songs, as they do in verse.
Poets who wrote for films
Several well-known poets wrote lyrics for Hindi cinema, bringing the sensibility of shayari to a mass audience. Their songs often resemble short ghazals or nazms set to music.
The ghazal in film
Many film songs are built like ghazals: a refrain, couplets of independent feeling, and a gentle, reflective mood.
Why songs stick
- Melody makes words memorable.
- Rhyme and refrain repeat the key idea.
- Emotion is shared by many listeners.
Songs and learning
Listening to film songs is a pleasant way to meet:
- new vocabulary
- rhythm and rhyme
- common images such as moon, rain and heart
Using lyrics in messages
Short lines from songs are widely quoted in messages. If you share one, remember:
- Credit the songwriter where you can.
- Do not claim it as your own.
- Choose lines that fit the moment.
A different pleasure
A verse read quietly on a page is not the same as a song with an orchestra. Reading lets you linger on each word.
Tips
- Listen for ghazal structure in songs.
- Notice the shared vocabulary.
- Read verses on their own, without music, to savour the words.
