Seasons in Love Poetry: Spring, Monsoon and Winter
How poets use seasons to mirror the stages and moods of love, from the joy of spring to the stillness of winter.
Seasons give poetry a calendar of feeling. Each carries its own mood.
Spring: बहार (bahaar)
Spring means new beginnings. Flowers bloom, and so does love. Poets use बहार, फूल (phool, flower) and ख़ुशबू (khushboo, fragrance) for the freshness of new love.
Summer: गर्मी (garmee)
Heat can stand for passion and restlessness. The long, hot afternoon becomes a symbol of waiting for relief, or for the beloved.
Monsoon: बरसात (barsaat)
Rain brings joy and longing in equal measure. See the separate article on rain for more.
Autumn: पतझड़ (patjhad)
When leaves fall, poets turn to loss, parting and the passing of time. पतझड़ can mirror a heart that has lost something.
Winter: सर्दी (sardee)
Winter brings warmth to the foreground. The idea of गर्म चाय (hot tea), a shawl, or a hand to hold becomes romantic. It can also stand for stillness and a quiet heart.
Seasons of the heart
| Season | Mood in poetry |

| Autumn | loss, change |
| Winter | warmth, calm |
An original example
तेरे आने से बहार लौट आई है, वरना पतझड़ ने बहुत दिन रखा था।
Tere aane se bahaar laut aayee hai, warna patjhad ne bahut din rakha tha. Spring has returned with your coming; autumn had kept me a long while.
An original couplet for illustration only.
Using seasons in messages
A seasonal verse gives a message a sense of occasion: a spring verse for a fresh start, a winter verse for a cosy evening.
Tips
- Notice how seasons mirror feelings.
- Learn the season words.
- Match a verse to the season outside.
