Saying I Love You in Hindi: Phrases Beyond Shayari
Simple, direct ways to express love in Hindi, from everyday phrases to more poetic ones.
Poetry is wonderful, but sometimes the plainest words are the best.
Direct phrases
| Hindi | Romanised | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| मैं तुमसे प्यार करता हूँ | main tumse pyaar karta hoon | I love you (said by a man) |
| मैं तुमसे प्यार करती हूँ | main tumse pyaar karti hoon | I love you (said by a woman) |
| मुझे तुमसे प्यार है | mujhe tumse pyaar hai | I am in love with you (any speaker) |
| मुझे तुम पसंद हो | mujhe tum pasand ho | I like you |
| तुम मेरे लिए ख़ास हो | tum mere liye khaas ho | You are special to me |
Gender in Hindi
The verb करना changes with the speaker: करता for a man and करती for a woman. The phrase मुझे तुमसे प्यार है works for everyone.
Tender phrases
- मुझे तुम्हारी याद आती है। I miss you.
- तुम मेरे साथ हो, यही काफ़ी है। It is enough that you are with me.
- तुम्हारे बिना अधूरा हूँ। I feel incomplete without you.
- मैं हमेशा तुम्हारे साथ हूँ। I am always with you.
Respect and formality
- तुम is warm and informal.
- आप is respectful and formal.
- तू is very intimate or very casual, and can be rude with the wrong person.
For a partner, तुम is most usual.
Terms of endearment
- जान (jaan), life, darling
- जानू (jaanu), a pet form
- मेरी जान (meree jaan), my dear
- प्रिय (priya), beloved, in more formal writing
Combining with shayari
Say it plainly first, then add a verse if you wish. A couplet is a sweet extra, not a substitute for saying what you mean.
Cultural notes
Expressions of love are often shown through actions in many families, such as caring and spending time together. Saying it aloud is welcome but not always the norm, so be sensitive to the person.
Tips
- Use the right verb form.
- Choose तुम or आप thoughtfully.
- Pair a phrase with a verse.
