One-Liners, Couplets and Longer Verses: Which to Send?
How the length of a verse changes its effect in a message, and when to choose short or long.
Verses come in different lengths. Choosing the right one can make a message land better.
One-liners
A single line of poetry can work well as a status or a quick text.
- Strength: instant, easy to remember
- Limit: less context or depth
- Best for: a short greeting, a quick thought
Couplets (two lines)
The sher is the classic unit.
- Strength: complete thought, balanced and rhythmic
- Limit: needs a good fit with the moment
- Best for: most messages
Four-liners
A rubai or a short stanza gives room to develop an idea.
- Strength: more feeling
- Limit: takes more reading
- Best for: birthdays, anniversaries, a heartfelt note
Longer verses
A ghazal or a nazm is rich but long.
- Strength: depth and variety
- Limit: easily skipped in a message
- Best for: a letter, a card, or reading aloud
Choosing by medium
| Medium | Best length |
|---|---|
| Instant message | couplet |
| Status | one or two lines |
| Card | couplet or four lines |
| Letter | any, with your own words |
| Voice note | couplet |
Reading habits
On a phone, people read quickly. A shorter verse is more likely to be read, felt and remembered.
Don't overload
If you wish to share a longer poem, tell the person it is there for them to enjoy when they have time.
An original example
