Imagery and Metaphor in Shayari: How Poets Say More With Less
The common images of shayari, such as flowers, candles and rivers, and how metaphor lets one line carry many meanings.
Shayari is short, so every image has to carry weight. Poets rely on a shared stock of images.
Classic image pairs
| Image | Often stands for |
|---|---|
| शमा (shama), candle | the beloved, or the one who burns with love |
| परवाना (parwaana), moth | the lover who is drawn to the flame |
| बुलबुल (bulbul), nightingale | the singing lover |
| गुल (gul), rose | the beloved's beauty |
| दरिया (dariya), river | the course of life or feeling |
| सागर / समंदर | depth and vastness |
| साक़ी (saaqi), cup-bearer | the giver of joy or insight |
| मंज़िल (manzil), destination | the goal, union |
The candle and the moth
One of the best-known pairings: the moth circles the candle flame and is consumed by it. It stands for a lover who gives everything for love, even at a cost.
The nightingale and the rose
In classical poetry, the nightingale sings out of love for the rose. It stands for a lover pouring out feeling towards the beloved.
Metaphor and simile
- Metaphor: "You are the moon."
- Simile: "You are like the moon."
In Hindi, जैसा / जैसी / सा / सी are common simile markers, as in चाँद सा चेहरा (a moon-like face).
Layers of meaning
A good verse works on two levels. A line about a river may be about a river, and also about life or love.
Reading tip
When you meet an image, ask: what is this standing for? The answer often opens the whole verse.
An original example
