Apologising With Shayari: When Words Fall Short
How to use a verse to open an apology, and why it should never replace a sincere conversation.
Saying sorry is hard. A gentle verse can soften the opening, but sincerity matters more than poetry.
When a verse helps
A couplet can:
- Break the silence after an argument
- Show you care and want to reconnect
- Express feelings that are hard to say directly
Words of apology
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| माफ़ी | forgiveness, apology |
| माफ़ करना | to forgive |
| ग़लती | mistake |
| पछतावा | regret |
| शर्मिंदा | ashamed |
| गिला | complaint, grievance |
| शिकवा | a grievance, a complaint |
Poetry in the tradition
गिला and शिकवा, the voicing of complaints, are old themes in Urdu poetry. Equally common is the poet who begs the beloved to forgive.
How to apologise well
- Be specific about what you are sorry for.
- Take responsibility, without excuses.
- Listen to how the other person feels.
- Offer to make it right.
- Give time if they need it.
Where a verse fits
Use it as an opening line, such as: "Here is how I feel, and I would like to talk."
What to avoid
- A verse alone with no explanation
- Making it sound as if the other person must forgive
- Sending verses repeatedly if there has been no reply
An original example
ग़लती मेरी थी, ये मैं मानता हूँ, बस एक बार फिर से बात कर लो।
Galtee meree thee, ye main maanta hoon, bas ek baar phir se baat kar lo. The mistake was mine, I admit it; just talk to me once more.
An original couplet for illustration only.
Tips
- Pair a verse with a direct apology.
- Respect their response.
- Choose gentle verses, not dramatic ones.
