The Punjabi Present Tense: ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ and ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ
How Punjabi forms the simple present and the present continuous, with the endings for each person and gender.
Punjabi verbs change with person, number and gender. The present tense is a good place to begin.
The simple present
Using ਕਰਨਾ (to do), the present forms are:
| Subject | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
The verb shows the gender of the subject, so a man says ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, and a woman says ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹਾਂ.
Uses
The simple present covers habits and general facts:
- ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਚਾਹ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। — I drink tea every day.
- ਉਹ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ। — She teaches at a school.
The present continuous
