Telling the Time in Punjabi: ਸਵਾ, ਸਾਢੇ and ਪੌਣੇ

Punjabi time expressions use special words for quarters and halves, and once you know them, clocks become easy.

Asking the time

• ਕਿੰਨੇ ਵਜੇ ਹਨ? (Kinne vaje han?) — What time is it?
• ਕਿੰਨੇ ਵਜੇ? — At what time?

ਵਜੇ (vaje) means "o'clock".

O'clock

The number plus ਵਜੇ:

6:00	ਛੇ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ
7:00	ਸੱਤ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ
8:00	ਅੱਠ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ
9:00	ਨੌਂ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ
10:00	ਦਸ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ

Quarters and halves

Time	Punjabi
quarter past three	ਸਵਾ ਤਿੰਨ
half past three	ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ
quarter to four	ਪੌਣੇ ਚਾਰ
one and a half	ਡੇਢ
two and a half	ਢਾਈ

• ਸਵਾ means "plus a quarter".
• ਸਾਢੇ means "plus a half".
• ਪੌਣੇ means "minus a quarter".
• ਡੇਢ (1:30) and ਢਾਈ (2:30) are special words.

Examples

• ਹੁਣ ਅੱਠ ਵੱਜੇ ਹਨ। — It's eight o'clock now.
• ਮੈਂ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਛੇ ਵਜੇ ਉੱਠਦਾ ਹਾਂ। — I get up at six in the morning. (male speaker)
• ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਪੰਜ ਵਜੇ ਹੈ। — The meeting is at five in the evening.
• ਗੱਡੀ ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਵਜੇ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ। — The train comes at half past three.
