Saying No in Punjabi: ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾ and ਮਤ
The main Punjabi negatives: how to say not, don't and no, with examples of each.
Punjabi has a small set of negative words, each with its own use.
The main negatives
| Word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ਨਹੀਂ | not, no | ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀਂਦਾ। — I don't drink tea. |
| ਨਾ | don't (commands) | ਨਾ ਜਾਓ। — Don't go. |
Negating a verb
Place ਨਹੀਂ before the verb:
| Positive | Negative |
|---|---|
| ਮੈਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। — I go. | ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ। — I don't go. |
| ਉਹ ਖਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। — She eats. | ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ। — She doesn't eat. |
| ਉਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। — They come. | ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ। — They don't come. |
Negating "to be"
- ਮੈਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਹਾਂ। — I'm a student.
- ਮੈਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ। — I'm not a student.

Negating the past
- ਮੈਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਆ। — I didn't go.

Nothing, no one, never

Commands

Tips
- Put ਨਹੀਂ before the verb.
