Asking Questions in Punjabi: ਕੀ, ਕੌਣ, ਕਿੱਥੇ and ਕਦੋਂ

Punjabi questions are formed by using a question word in place of the missing information, and the word order stays the same.

Question words

ਕਿਹੜਾ / ਕਿਹੜੀ	kihṛā	which

Examples

• ਇਹ ਕੀ ਹੈ? — What is this?
• ਉਹ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ? — Who is he/she?
• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ? — Where do you live?
• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਆਓਗੇ? — When will you come?
• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੇਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਉਂ ਆਏ? — Why did you come late?
• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ? — How are you?
• ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਹੈ? — How much does it cost?

Yes/no questions

Add ਕੀ at the start, or simply raise your voice:

• ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਚਾਹ ਪੀਓਗੇ? — Will you have tea?
• ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੈ? — Is this your book?
• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ? — Are you coming?

Answers: ਹਾਂ (yes), ਨਹੀਂ (no).

ਇਸ ਦਾ ਕੀ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ?	What does this mean?

Word order

The question word usually comes just before the verb:

• ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ? — Where are you going?
