To Be and To Have in Marathi: आहे, होता and माझ्याकडे
The Marathi verb 'to be' in present and past, and how Marathi expresses possession without a verb 'to have'.
Two small ideas underpin much of Marathi: being and having. Both are simple once you see the pattern.
To be: present
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| मी | आहे |
| तू | आहेस |
| तो / ती / ते | आहे |
| आम्ही | आहोत |
| तुम्ही | आहात |
| ते (they) | आहेत |
Examples:
- मी विद्यार्थी आहे. — I am a student.
- तू कुठे आहेस? — Where are you?
- आम्ही घरी आहोत. — We are at home.
- ते डॉक्टर आहेत. — They are doctors.
To be: past
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| मी | होतो / होते (m. / f.) |
| तू | होतास / होतीस |
| तो / ती | होता / होती |
| आम्ही | होतो |
| तुम्ही | होता |
| ते | होते |
- मी काल घरी होतो. — I was at home yesterday.
- ती शाळेत होती. — She was at school.
Negative
Use नाही:
- मी विद्यार्थी नाही. — I am not a student.
- तो घरी नाही. — He is not at home.
To have: no single verb
Marathi says something "is at" a person, using -कडे, or "to" a person:
| Marathi | Meaning |
|---|---|
| माझ्याकडे पुस्तक आहे. | I have a book. |
| तिच्याकडे गाडी आहे. | She has a car. |
| माझ्याकडे पैसे नाहीत. | I don't have money. |
The pronoun forms: माझ्याकडे (with me), तुझ्याकडे (with you), त्याच्याकडे (with him), तिच्याकडे (with her), आमच्याकडे (with us), तुमच्याकडे (with you, respectful).
Family and body
For family and health, Marathi uses मला ("to me"):
- मला एक भाऊ आहे. — I have a brother.
- मला ताप आहे. — I have a fever.
- मला भूक लागली आहे. — I am hungry.
Tips
- Learn the present forms of आहे.
- Use -कडे for possession.
- Use the dictionary to check phrases.
