The Marathi Present Tense: करतो, करते and करत आहे
How Marathi forms the simple present and the present continuous, with the endings for each person and gender.
Marathi verbs change their endings to match the subject in person, number and gender. The present tense is a good place to start.
The simple present
Using करणे (to do), the present forms are:
| Subject | Masculine | Feminine |
|---|---|---|
| मी (I) | करतो | करते |
| तू (you, informal) | करतोस | करतेस |
| तो / ती (he / she) | करतो | करते |
| आम्ही / आपण (we) | करतो | करतो |
| तुम्ही (you, respectful) | करता | करता |
| ते (they) | करतात | करतात |
The speaker's gender shows in the verb: a man says मी जातो, a woman says मी जाते.
Uses
The simple present covers habits and facts:
- मी रोज चहा पितो. — I drink tea every day.
- ती शाळेत शिकवते. — She teaches at a school.
- सूर्य पूर्वेला उगवतो. — The sun rises in the east.
The present continuous
For an action happening now, use the verb stem plus -त plus a form of आहे:
| Subject | Form |
|---|---|
| मी | करत आहे |
| तू | करत आहेस |
| तो / ती | करत आहे |
| आम्ही | करत आहोत |
| तुम्ही | करत आहात |
