Applying for a Job in German: Lebenslauf, Anschreiben and the Interview

The vocabulary and conventions of German job applications: the CV, cover letter, references, interviews, contracts, probation and notice periods.

German applications follow conventions that differ from many other countries. Knowing them makes your application look professional. This is general guidance; always follow the instructions of the specific employer.

The application package

A German application (die Bewerbung) typically has:

  1. das Anschreiben / das Motivationsschreiben — the cover letter
  2. der Lebenslauf — the CV
  3. die Zeugnisse — certificates and references (degrees, previous employers' references)
  4. Sometimes das Bewerbungsfoto — a photo (increasingly optional)

Many employers now use online portals or ask for a single PDF.

The CV (Lebenslauf)

A German CV is usually:

  • Tabular (tabellarisch): dates on the left, information on the right.
  • Reverse chronological: most recent first.
  • Two pages or fewer, in many cases.

Typical sections:

  • Persönliche Daten — personal details (name, contact, sometimes date of birth)
  • Berufserfahrung — work experience
  • Ausbildung / Studium — education
  • Kenntnisse — skills (Sprachkenntnisse, EDV-Kenntnisse)
  • Weiterbildung — further training
  • Interessen / Hobbys — interests (optional)

Use consistent dates (03/2020 – 08/2024), and no gaps that you can't explain.

The cover letter (Anschreiben)

A one-page formal letter, tailored to the company and the role.

Opening:

  • Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, — Dear Sir or Madam (unknown recipient)
  • Sehr geehrte Frau Müller, / Sehr geehrter Herr Schmidt, — with a name

Typical phrases:

  • Mit freundlichen Grüßen — Yours sincerely
