Packing List Checklists for Trips: Build Once, Reuse Forever
How to create reusable packing checklists for weekends, holidays and business trips so you never forget chargers, documents or medication again.
Packing is stressful because it relies on memory at a busy time. A reusable checklist turns it into a calm, ten-minute job.
The master list approach
Create a master packing note with everything you might ever take, grouped by category. For each trip, duplicate it, and delete what you don't need. It's much faster than starting from scratch, and much safer than relying on memory.
Categories to include
Documents and money
- Passport, visa, ID
- Tickets and booking confirmations
- Travel insurance details
- Cards and some cash
- Driving licence, if driving
Electronics
- Phone and charger
- Power bank
- Adapter for local plugs
- Headphones
- Camera or tablet, if used
Clothing
- Underwear and socks (one per day, plus a spare)
- Tops and trousers or skirts
- Sleepwear
- Jacket or sweater
- Swimwear, if needed
- Comfortable shoes
Toiletries
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Shampoo and soap
- Skincare, sun cream
- Razor
- Contact lenses or glasses
Health
- Prescription medicines, in original packaging
- Basic first aid: plasters, pain relief
- Any items needed for allergies or conditions
Extras
- Water bottle
- Snacks
- Umbrella or rain jacket
- Book or entertainment
- Small lock for luggage
Adjust to your own needs, and to the destination.
Make templates for trip types
Keep a few variants:
- Weekend away: light clothing, essentials.
- Beach holiday: swimwear, sun protection.
- Business trip: formal clothing, laptop, presentation materials.
- Cold weather: layers, gloves, warm hat.
- Travelling with children: snacks, games, spare clothes, and children's documents.
Check the weather
Before packing, look at the forecast, and adjust the clothing list. Roll or fold clothes so that everything fits.
Pack in stages
- Three days before: make the list, and check what needs washing or buying.
- The night before: pack, ticking items off.
- Morning of departure: last checks, including documents, phone, wallet and keys.
The "last minute" section
Add a short checklist for things you can only pack on the day: phone charger, toothbrush, medication, house keys. Tick them just before you leave.
Before you lock the door
A final home checklist can be helpful: windows closed, appliances switched off, bins emptied, plants watered, and someone informed.
After the trip
Note anything you forgot or didn't use, and update the master list. Over time, it becomes perfectly tailored.
Use reminders
Set a reminder a few days before departure to start packing, and one for online check-in. Add the reminder text: "Pack for Lisbon trip: check list".
Share with family
Children or partners can use their own copies of the checklist, or you can create separate lists for each person.
Common mistakes
- Packing from memory.
- Not checking the weather.
- Leaving documents and chargers to the last minute.
- Not updating the master list.
