Learning Bengali Through Songs: Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti, Baul and More
How Bengali music traditions can boost your vocabulary and pronunciation, with tips for reading lyrics and looking up unfamiliar words.
Bengal has one of the richest musical traditions in the world, and songs are one of the most enjoyable ways to learn the language. Lyrics stick in memory, and rhythm helps pronunciation.
Rabindra Sangeet
Rabindranath Tagore wrote more than two thousand songs, collectively known as রবীন্দ্রসংগীত (Rabindra Sangeet). They cover love, nature, devotion, patriotism and the seasons. Because Tagore also wrote the lyrics of the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh, his songs are known in every Bengali household.
Nazrul Geeti
নজরুলগীতি (Nazrul Geeti) are the songs of Kazi Nazrul Islam, who wrote thousands, ranging from patriotic songs to devotional songs (both Islamic and Hindu), romantic ballads and folk-inspired numbers. His language is vigorous and direct.
Baul songs
The Baul tradition, a mystic folk practice from Bengal, produces spiritual songs, often about the search for the divine within. Baul songs were listed by UNESCO in 2008 as intangible cultural heritage. Lalon Fakir, a nineteenth-century Baul saint, wrote hundreds of songs, and his songs are among the most popular folk songs.
Bhatiali and other folk songs
- ভাটিয়ালি (Bhatiali) — river songs sung by boatmen, full of longing and river imagery.
- ভাওয়াইয়া (Bhawaiya) — folk songs of north Bengal.
- কীর্তন (Kirtan) — devotional songs.
- আধুনিক গান (adhunik gaan) — "modern" Bengali songs, including film and pop.
How songs help
- Pronunciation. Sung syllables slow the language down and let you hear each sound.
- Vocabulary. Songs revisit nature, love and daily life, all useful themes.
- Grammar. Repeated lines show patterns such as verb endings.
- Culture. Songs are reference points for references in conversation and literature.
A study method
- Choose a song with lyrics available in Bengali script.
- Read the lyrics while listening.
- Look up each unfamiliar word.
- Sing along, first slowly, then at full speed.
- Learn one verse at a time.
Song vocabulary
- গান (gan) — song
- সুর (shur) — tune
- গলা (gola) — voice, throat
- গায়ক / গায়িকা (gayok / gayika) — male singer / female singer
- বাজনা (bajna) — instrumental music

Language notes
Older songs may use poetic words that are not used in everyday speech. Treat them as a bonus vocabulary. If a word doesn't match your dictionary, try searching for alternative spellings.
Enjoy the music
You do not have to understand every word to enjoy a song, but the more you learn, the deeper the experience becomes.
