Asking Questions in Bengali: Ki, Ke, Kothay and Friends
The main Bengali question words, how to form yes/no questions, and useful everyday questions for meeting people and travelling.
Asking questions is the quickest route into real conversation. Bengali questions are simple to build, and the question words are easy to learn as a set.
Yes/no questions
Add কি (ki) to a statement, or simply raise your intonation:
- তুমি কি যাবে? — tumi ki jabe? — Will you go?
- আপনি কি বাংলা বলেন? — apni ki Bangla bolen? — Do you speak Bengali?
The কি can sit near the start or before the verb; it often floats.
Question words
- কী (ki) — what
- কে (ke) — who
- কাকে (kake) — whom
- কার (kar) — whose
- কোথায় (kothay) — where
- কখন (kokhon) — when
- কেন (keno) — why
- কীভাবে (kibhabe) — how
- কত (koto) — how much or how many
- কোন (kon) — which
- কয়টা (koyta) — how many (counting)
Word order
The question word usually sits directly before the verb, in the position of the answer:
- তোমার নাম কী? — tomar nam ki? — What's your name?
- আপনি কোথায় থাকেন? — apni kothay thaken? — Where do you live?
- এটার দাম কত? — etar dam koto? — How much does this cost?
Everyday questions

- হ্যাঁ (hyan) — yes
- না (na) — no

Politeness
Use আপনি forms with strangers and elders. Adding দয়া করে (doya kore, "please") or একটু (ektu, "a little") softens requests.
Word for "or"
To ask an either/or question, use নাকি (naki): চা নাকি কফি? (cha naki kofi?), "Tea or coffee?"
