Milestone Birthdays Around the World: 18, 21, 60 and Beyond
How different cultures mark coming-of-age and landmark birthdays, from quinceañeras to sweet sixteens to sixtieth-birthday traditions.
Every culture picks certain birthdays as more significant than others. The specific ages differ, but the impulse — marking a change in status or responsibility — is universal.
Coming-of-age celebrations
- Quinceañera (Latin America): a celebration for girls turning fifteen, traditionally combining a religious service with a large party.
- Sweet sixteen (North America): a popular party marking a sixteenth birthday.
- Seijin no Hi (Japan): Coming of Age Day, held on the second Monday of January, celebrates those who turn or have turned twenty in the year. Japan lowered the legal age of adulthood to eighteen in 2022, but many municipalities continue to hold the ceremony for twenty-year-olds.
- Bar and bat mitzvah (Jewish tradition): marking religious maturity, at thirteen for boys and twelve for girls in many communities, with some communities observing bat mitzvah at thirteen.
Landmarks in adulthood
- Eighteenth: the age of majority in many countries, tied to voting, contracts and independence.
- Twenty-first: traditionally the age of majority in many English-speaking countries and still widely celebrated, with the "key to the door" custom.
- Thirtieth, fortieth, fiftieth: decade birthdays often prompt bigger parties or trips.
Later-life traditions
- Sixtieth (kanreki, Japan and hwangap, Korea): the sixtieth birthday completes one cycle of the traditional sixty-year calendar and is treated as a rebirth, sometimes with red clothing in Japan.
- Seventieth and eightieth: many cultures hold larger family gatherings, and in some traditions elders receive formal blessings.
- Centenarians: in many countries, people reaching a hundred receive an official greeting.
Why these ages?
They generally line up with legal changes, religious rites of passage or cycles of the calendar. A sixty-year cycle, for instance, is built from combining twelve zodiac animals with five elements.
Planning a milestone
If you're organising one, work out the date first — sometimes traditions count from birth date, sometimes from a lunar date, and the difference can shift the day. Give yourself the countdown, then break it into tasks.
Celebrating your own
Whatever your background, choosing to mark a birthday deliberately turns an ordinary date into a memory. Find out the exact number of days to it and plan backwards.
