Counting Anniversaries and Time Together in Years, Months and Days
How to work out how long you've been together, married or friends, and how to plan the next anniversary with an accurate countdown.
Anniversaries are age calculations by another name: instead of a birth date, you start from the date something began. The same accuracy rules apply, and the same small errors creep in.
What you can count
- Time since you started dating or first met.
- Wedding or civil-partnership anniversaries.
- Time since moving in together, adopting a pet or starting a business.
- Work anniversaries, for both employers and employees.
Years, months and days give a richer picture
"We've been together three years" is nice; "three years, two months and eleven days" is the kind of detail partners often enjoy. Using total days can be fun too — the 1,000th day is a widely celebrated milestone, roughly two years and nine months in.
Traditional wedding anniversary themes
Many cultures attach a material to each year: paper for the first, cotton for the second, leather for the third, and so on, moving through silver at twenty-five and gold at fifty. The specific lists vary between countries, but they give gift ideas and a reason to mark each date.
Counting the next anniversary
To find how long remains, use the same countdown as for a birthday: the next occurrence of the month and day, then the number of days between today and that date. If the anniversary has just passed, the next one is almost a year away.
Leap-day beginnings
If something began on 29 February, decide in advance whether the anniversary is observed on 28 February or 1 March in non-leap years. Many couples pick the day that feels right and stay consistent.
Milestone days beyond years
- 100 days
- 500 days
- 1,000 days
- 5,000 days (about 13 years 8 months)
Those numbers give extra occasions to celebrate without waiting a full year.
Work anniversaries
For employment, the exact length of service often determines benefits, notice periods and leave entitlements, so precise counting is worth doing. Check your contract's wording on how service is counted.
Make it a tradition
Set a yearly reminder with the number of years so far, and add a note for a small ritual: dinner at the same restaurant, a photo in the same spot, a letter to each other.
