How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months and Days

"How old are you?" usually gets answered with a whole number, but a genuinely exact age — years, months, and days — needs a proper date calculation, not just subtracting birth year from the current year. Here's how it actually works, and why it trips people up when done by hand.

Why simple year subtraction isn't enough

If someone was born on 20 November and today is 15 March, simply subtracting birth year from the current year overstates their age by one — their birthday hasn't happened yet this year. An exact age calculation has to check whether the birth month and day have already occurred in the current year, not just compare years.

The manual calculation method

1. Start with the year difference: current year minus birth year.
2. Check the month and day: if the current month and day are before the birth month and day, subtract 1 from the year difference (the birthday hasn't happened yet this year).
3. Calculate the remaining months: count the number of full months since the last birthday.
4. Calculate the remaining days: count the days since the last full month mark.

This sounds simple in principle, but step 4 is where manual calculation usually goes wrong — because months have different lengths (28 to 31 days), "one month" isn't a fixed number of days, and doing this arithmetic by hand across several months quickly becomes error-prone.

Leap years complicate it further

Anyone born on 29 February faces an extra wrinkle — in non-leap years, there's no 29 February to count as the actual anniversary, which is why different systems handle a leap-year birthday differently (some treat 28 February as the anniversary, others 1 March). A proper age calculation needs to handle this edge case explicitly rather than just assuming every year behaves the same way.

Why exact age matters in specific situations

• Eligibility checks — many forms, applications, and legal requirements specify an exact age threshold ("must be at least 18 years old as of [date]"), where being a few weeks under counts as not meeting the requirement at all.
