What Research Says About Puzzles and Brain Health
An honest look at what is known, and not known, about word puzzles and thinking skills.
It is common to hear that puzzles keep the brain sharp. The picture is more nuanced.
What seems well supported
- People who stay mentally active tend to report better wellbeing.
- Practising a task makes you better at that task. If you do word searches, you tend to get faster at word searches.
- Enjoyable activities can lift mood and provide a break from stress.
What is less certain
- Whether puzzles prevent dementia. Studies have shown links between lifelong mental activity and brain health, but it is hard to separate cause from other factors, such as education, social life and general health.
- Whether puzzle skills transfer to other kinds of thinking. Evidence is mixed. Getting better at word searches does not automatically make you better at everything else.
A balanced view
Puzzles can be a pleasant part of a healthy lifestyle. They are unlikely to be a cure-all.
What else supports brain health
According to health organisations, helpful habits include:
- Regular physical activity
- A balanced diet
- Good sleep
- Social connection
- Managing blood pressure and other health conditions
- Learning new things
Variety
Rather than doing only one type of puzzle, try a mix: word games, number games, reading, learning a language, music, conversation.
Play for enjoyment
The best reason to play is that you like it. If it also helps you relax, that is a bonus.
If you are worried about memory
If you or a family member are concerned about memory or thinking, speak to a doctor.
Tips
- Enjoy puzzles for what they are.
- Mix activities.
- Look after your overall health.
