Training Your Eyes: Visual Scanning for Puzzles
How your eyes move across a grid, and simple exercises to make your searching smoother.
Word searches are, in part, a visual skill. Your eyes can improve with practice.
How eyes move
When you look at a page, your eyes make short jumps, called saccades, and pause briefly, called fixations. In a word search, you scan the grid by repeating these jumps.
Habits that slow you down
- Jumping randomly between areas
- Staring too long at one spot
- Looking too closely at individual letters
Habits that help
- Soft focus. Look at the grid as a whole, rather than at one letter.
- Steady rhythm. Move your gaze in smooth lines.
- Wide view. Let your peripheral vision pick up patterns.
Simple exercises
- Row sweep: move your eyes slowly along each row, without stopping.
- Column sweep: do the same down each column.
- First-letter hunt: pick a letter, and find all of them in the grid.
- Pair hunt: find all the TH or ER pairs.
Using your finger
Running a finger or a card along each row keeps your eyes steady and prevents skipping.
Rest your eyes
Look away from the grid every few minutes, and blink often. Tired eyes miss things.
Light and size
- Play in good light.
- Increase the text size if you can.
- Reduce glare on your screen.
Progress
Many people find they get faster after several sessions. Do not worry about speed. Enjoy the process.
Tips
- Use a soft, wide gaze.
- Move in steady lines.
- Rest your eyes.
