Reducing Eye Strain When Playing Puzzles on Your Phone
Simple habits to keep your eyes comfortable during longer puzzle sessions.
Phone screens are bright and close. A few habits make longer sessions more comfortable.
Why strain happens
When we look at a screen, we blink less, and our eyes work to focus at a close distance. This can lead to dryness, tiredness and headaches.
The 20-20-20 rule
A popular guideline is: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for 20 seconds. It gives your eyes a short rest.
Other habits
- Blink often. Make a point of blinking fully.
- Hold the phone at a comfortable distance, around arm's length or a bit closer.
- Avoid glare. Move away from windows or lamps shining on the screen.
- Match the brightness to the room. A very bright screen in a dark room is tiring.
- Increase text size if you squint.
- Take breaks. Stand up, stretch and look out of a window.
Use a comfortable posture
- Keep your back supported.
- Hold the phone at a comfortable height, so your neck is not bent down for long.
If you wear glasses
Make sure your prescription is up to date. If you have difficulty seeing the screen, speak to an eye professional.
When to see a professional
If you have persistent eye pain, blurred vision, or frequent headaches, speak to an optometrist or a doctor.
A relaxing break
Since the game has no time pressure, you can pause whenever you like. Treat breaks as part of the fun.
Tips
- Follow the 20-20-20 rule.
- Mind your lighting and posture.
- Pause freely.
