Building Vocabulary With Word Search Puzzles
How to turn a simple word search into a vocabulary-learning tool, with a practical routine.
A word search is more than a pastime. With a small change of habit, it becomes a vocabulary exercise.
Why it works
- You see each word several times: in the list, and in the grid.
- You have to spell it letter by letter, which reinforces the shape of the word.
- It is low pressure, so the learning feels light.
A simple routine
- Read the list first. Note any words you don't know.
- Look up unfamiliar words before you start.
- Say each word aloud as you find it.
- Use it in a sentence after you find it.
- Review the new words at the end.
Keep a word list
Write unfamiliar words, with their meanings, in a notebook or on your phone. Review it every few days.
Group words by theme
Related words are easier to remember together, such as FOREST, RIVER, CLOUD, VALLEY and SUMMIT.
Learn word families
When you meet a word, think of related ones:
- create, creative, creation, creator
- act, action, active, actor
Use it in speech
Try to use at least one new word in conversation or writing the same day.
Test yourself
After a puzzle, close the app and try to write down the words you remember.
For different ages
- Children: simple, familiar words
- Teens and adults: richer, less common words
- Language learners: words in the target language
Tips
- Look up what you don't know.
- Say words aloud.
- Use new words soon.
