How to Write a Love Message in Five Simple Steps
A simple method for writing a message that sounds like you, even when the words do not come easily.
Most people know what they feel but struggle to put it into words. This five-step method makes it easier.
Step 1: Pick one feeling
Do not try to say everything. Choose one feeling: gratitude, missing them, admiration, excitement or comfort.
Step 2: Add one specific detail
A specific detail is worth more than a general claim.
- General: "You are amazing."
- Specific: "The way you laughed at your own joke at dinner is still making me smile."
Step 3: Say it in your voice
Write as you would speak. If you never say "my beloved", do not write it. Use the words you would use with them in person.
Step 4: Keep it short
For a text, two or three sentences are enough. A short message is more likely to be read in full and remembered.
Step 5: End with warmth
Close with something that opens a door, such as:
- "Can't wait to see you."
- "Thinking of you."
- "Call me when you're free?"
A worked example
Feeling: gratitude. Detail: they stayed up to help you with a presentation.
"Thank you for staying up with me last night. I could not have done it without you. I'm lucky to have you."
Using ready-made messages
If you are stuck, a collection of messages can give you a starting point. Choose one that fits, then change a word or add a detail so it sounds like you.
What to avoid
- Copying without reading. Make sure it fits.
- Too many words. Short is stronger.
- Empty praise. Be specific.
Tips
- One feeling, one detail.
- Write as you speak.
- Personalise any ready-made message.
