Spoken and Written Telugu: Two Registers
Why everyday spoken Telugu differs from the formal written style, and which to learn first.
Like Tamil, Telugu has a noticeable gap between formal writing and everyday speech.
Two styles
- Written (formal) Telugu is used in books, newspapers, official documents and many news broadcasts.
- Spoken (colloquial) Telugu is used in conversation, in films and on social media.
Some differences
| Meaning | Written | Spoken |
|---|---|---|
| What are you doing? | మీరు ఏమి చేస్తున్నారు? | మీరు ఏం చేస్తున్నారు? |
| I do not know | నాకు తెలియదు | నాకు తెలీదు |
| What is it? | ఇది ఏమిటి? | ఇదేంటి? |
Spoken forms often shorten words and endings.
Regional flavour
Telugu is spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and across the world. The accent and vocabulary vary between regions, such as coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana, and each has its own colour.
What this means for learners
- Speak and listen with spoken Telugu.
- Read and write with the formal style.
- Expect to switch between the two.
Where you will meet each
- Films and television: mostly spoken
- News and textbooks: mostly written
- Messages and social media: a mix
A dictionary helps
A dictionary generally lists the standard form of a word. Compare it with what you hear in conversation.
Where to start
Many learners begin with spoken Telugu so they can talk with family and friends, then add the formal style for reading.
Tips
- Decide your goal.
- Listen to both styles.
- Use the dictionary to check standard forms.
