Forming Plurals in Telugu
How Telugu makes nouns plural with the ending -లు, and the common spelling changes that come with it.
The standard Telugu plural ending is -లు (-lu).
The basic rule
| Singular | Plural | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| పుస్తకం (pustakam) | పుస్తకాలు (pustakaalu) | book(s) |
| చెట్టు (chettu) | చెట్లు (chetlu) | tree(s) |
| పువ్వు (puvvu) | పువ్వులు (puvvulu) | flower(s) |
| అమ్మాయి (ammaayi) | అమ్మాయిలు (ammaayilu) | girl(s) |
| ఇల్లు (illu) | ఇళ్లు (illu) | house(s) |
Words ending in -ం
Nouns ending in -ం drop the ం, lengthen the vowel before, and add -లు:
- పుస్తకం becomes పుస్తకాలు
- పండు (fruit) becomes పండ్లు
- రంగు (colour) becomes రంగులు
Words ending in -అ and -ఉ
- కుక్క (dog) becomes కుక్కలు
- పిల్లి (cat) becomes పిల్లులు
- చెట్టు (tree) becomes చెట్లు
People
For people, -లు may also be used, but a respect plural appears too:
- పిల్ల (child) becomes పిల్లలు (children)
- మనిషి (person) becomes మనుషులు (people)
Irregular plurals
A few plurals change more than the ending:
- మనిషి becomes మనుషులు
- ఇల్లు becomes ఇళ్లు
- నీరు (water) is mostly used as నీళ్లు
After a number
రెండు పుస్తకాలు (two books) is standard. In speech, the plural ending is sometimes relaxed after a number.
Tips
- Learn -లు first.
- Notice vowel changes.
- Use the dictionary to check plural forms.
