Tamil numerals

Traditional Tamil also has its own numeral signs, such as ௧ (1), ௨ (2) and ௩ (3), though everyday life now mostly uses the international digits 1, 2, 3. You may see the older numerals in older books and some inscriptions.

Using numbers

  • ஒரு புத்தகம் (oru puththagam), one book
  • இரண்டு புத்தகங்கள் (irandu puththagangal), two books
  • ஐந்து ரூபாய் (aindhu roopaay), five rupees

Notice that ஒன்று becomes ஒரு before a noun.

Asking and telling

  • எத்தனை? (eththanai?) How many?
  • எவ்வளவு? (evvalavu?) How much?
  • இது எவ்வளவு? (idhu evvalavu?) How much is this?

Ages and prices

  • எனக்கு இருபது வயது. (enakku irubadhu vayadhu) I am twenty years old.

Here இருபது (irubadhu) means twenty.

Tips

  1. Learn 1 to 10 first.
  2. Remember ஒரு before nouns.
