One Letter, Two Sounds: How Tamil க Becomes ga
Tamil uses one letter for k and g, and one for t and d. A guide to the rules that decide the sound.
Tamil script has no separate letters for voiced sounds like g, d and b. One letter covers both the voiceless and voiced sound, and position decides which you say.
The pairs
| Letter | Sounds |
|---|---|
| க | k or g (or a soft h between vowels) |
| ச | ch or s |
| ட | t or d |
| த | th or dh |
| ப | p or b |
The general rule
- At the start of a word the letter is voiceless: கடல் (kadal), sea, starts with k.
- After a nasal the letter is voiced: தங்கம் (thangam), gold, is said with ng-g. பந்து (bandhu), ball, has a d sound.
- Doubled the letter is voiceless: பத்து (paththu), ten; அக்கா (akka), older sister.
- Between vowels the letter is often voiced or soft: மகன் (magan), son, is said with a g.
Examples
| Word | Meaning | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| காலை | morning | kaalai |
| மகள் | daughter | magal |
| பாடம் | lesson | paadam |
| அப்பா | father | appa |
| பூக்கள் | flowers | pookkal |
Why this matters
If you try to read Tamil with fixed sounds for each letter, you will sound unnatural. Paying attention to position helps your pronunciation.
Loanwords
In loanwords, Tamil uses these letters to write foreign sounds, such as டாக்டர் (daaktar), doctor.
Don't worry about it
Native speakers learn these patterns by ear. As a learner, listen to speech and imitate it, and the rules will feel natural.
Tips
- Listen before you read aloud.
- Notice the position of the letter in a word.
- Use the dictionary to check both spelling and meaning.
